St. Peter ’s Unity Secondary School, Akure, Ondo State, yesterday lost about N3 million naira to dare-devil gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.
The heavily armed men stormed the school premises, where they were said to have trailed and struck the school bursar who had returned from the bank where he withdrew some money.
sources said as the bursar entered into the premises, the robbers waylaid him, while shooting sporadically into the air to scare away workers, teachers and pupils of the government school.
A source said , “ The robbers must have been trailing the bursar from the bank where he had gone to withdraw the money . They forcefully collected the money from him ; but nobody was hurt. ”
The bursar is now cooling his heels at the state police command .
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo command , Mr . Femi Joseph , who confirmed the bursar’s arrest , said investigation had commenced into the matter .
He blamed the bursar for going to the bank to withdraw such a huge amount of money without police escort .
“What we learnt was that the hoodlums traced him ( bursar) to the school after he had gone to withdraw a large sum of money without police protection . The money should be close to N 3m .
“He is with us and he is helping with investigation. We will quiz him to ascertain whether he knows more than he claims , ” Joseph said
