About 50,000-day-old chicks have been distributed to 23 poultry farmers in Ondo state through the ‘Igba Otun Broiler Chicken Poultry Scheme’.
The programme is an initiative of the Ondo state government, in collaboration with some private organizations and the Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Agriculture, Akin Olotu made the disclosure at the 3rd batch of the distribution of chicks, vaccines, drugs and feeds to poultry farmers at the Trade Fair Complex, Igbatoro road in Akure.
Olotu said the scheme which is primarily designed to solve the problem of broiler production in the state will also generate employment and empower citizens, especially women and youths.
Assistant Managing Director, TUNS farms Nig. limited, one of the collaborating organizations, Mr Taofik Badmus said about 100,000 broiler day-old chicks will be supplied monthly to farmers which will in return make Ondo state a broiler poultry hub.
The state coordinator, Igba Otun Broiler Production Scheme, Mr Joseph Aladesuyi said the initiative is open to registered members of Poultry Association of Nigeria adding that the scheme will produce self-sufficient poultry farmers.
Some of the beneficiaries, like the state treasurer for PAN, Mr Biodun Adesida, Omolola Esan and Mrs Arinola Owanikin commended the present administration for the initiative promising to put in all efforts to make the scheme a success.
