Ondo State, also known as the Sunshine State is one of Nigeria’s 36 states. Ondo was created on 3 February 1976 from the former Western State. It part of the old ondo state which Ekiti was included. The two were separated in 1996, when Gen Sani Abacha created Ekiti among several other states. Akure is the state capital.

The state is bounded in the East by Edo and delta States, in the North by kogi State. And in the West by Osun Oyo Ogun and Lagos States and in the South by the Atlantic Ocean.

Major towns in Ondo State includes; Akure, Ikare-Akoko, Okitipupa, Ondo, Ore and Owo. Others are, Idanre, Akungba-Akoko and Ose. The majority of the state’s citizens live in urban centers

Government and Administration

The State Capital is Akure. Ondo state has three senatorial districts. Namely; north, central and south. The Government House and Secretariat are are Alagbaka, Akure. While most of the Government Ministries and Agencies are domiciled here.

The ethnic groups in Ondo State is largely the Yoruba; with subgroups and dialects such the Akoko and Owo people who inhabits the northern. Akure and it’s subgroup, Idanre and Ondo occupies Ondo central, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ijaw and minority such as Apoi and Arogbo populations inhabit the coastal southern areas. A remarkable number of the Ondo State people who speak a version of the Yoruba language similar to Ife dialect can be found in Oke-Igbo.


Ondo people holds education in high esteem and is given priority by the state government.  Ondo has 541 public primary schools 74 registered private primary schools. Also the state has 141 public secondary schools and 18 registered private secondary schools while there are other four technical colleges.

Business Opportunities

Industry and Natural Resources

Ondo is endowed with rich natural vegetation and arable land which is highly conducive for small,to large scale and industrial farming. The state is equally blessed with several natural resources such as bitumen, oil, Ceramics e.t.c. it’s forest vegetation enables continuous timber logging and sawmilling.

In addition, foodcrops such as; yam, cassava, pepper, plantain, maize, banana are cultivated in large amount. Ondo. Agriculture, including fishing constitute the main occupation of the people of the state. It remain the main stay of cocoa and rubber production in Nigeria.

Major industries established by government in the state includes; Oluwa Glass Company Plc, Igbokoda. This industry made use of the abundance of high quality silica sand that could be found in various parts of the Local Government. The silica sand  accounts for about 75% of the raw materials for manufacturing glasses sheet and could be harvested in large quantity in various places Igbokoda community. Oluwa Glass Company can produce for both export and local consumption and the venture could be a genuine source of inspiration to prospective investors.

Oil and Gas

In ondo state, oil is found in Ilaje local government which a stretch of swamp and coastlines. Ondo produces 60,000 bpd of oil daily, making it the 5th oil producing state in the country accounting for about 3.74% of Nigeria’s aggregate daily offering. Aside oil Mahin and Ugbonla, the Eastern part of Ilaje also boast of one of the largest coconut plantations in West Africa.

There are oil wells and fields spread all over the Local Government Area both onshore and offshore, Oil Companies such as Shell, Chevron, Express Petroleum and Gas Company, Atlas Oil Company, Texaco Nigeria Ltd and Consolidated Oil,  Allied Energy Oil Company, Cavendish Oil Company, Esso-Mobil were at one time or the other operational in the Area.

It is on record that crude oil was first discovered at Araromi Sea-side in 1908 and later in 1952 at Ogogoro,  even before it was discovered in River State in 1956. Recently, the hotly contested onshore Oilwells formerly credited to Delta state were eventually returned to Ondo State.

Moreover, Bitumen is found in large quantity in Ilaje Local Government. Places such as Mahintedo, Igbo egunrin, Igbobi, Agerige, Araromi Sea-Side and a host of other communities boast of this natural resources.

In the light of this, the proposed seaport and exchange zone proposed to be cited at Araromi Sea-Side will serve as a means of exporting the products to other parts of the world.

To promote commercial fishing in Ondo state, the Federal Government established the Multi Million naira Terminal at Igbokoda, bearing in mind the abundant local experience, labour supply direct access to the sea proposed entrance for big fishing vessels, creeks and rivers, the fishing industry remains attractive to willing investors.

Other potential business prospects are the Okitipupa Oil Palm Plc and Oluwa Glass Factory.Both of these are listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. There is also the Araromi oil Palm and the Ifon Ceramics at Ifon, Ose local government area. The administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko established the Sunshine Cassava Food Processing Factory at Ikoya in Okitipupa before leaving office.


A variety of tourist attractions abound in the state. Among the leading spots are the historic Idanre Hills with guest houses built by the government which attracts yearly tourism and cultural festival known as Maare Festival.

One of the untapped tourist attraction sites Ondo state is the Isarun  Cave of Ashes (Iwo Eleru). It is located in Isarun town in Ifedore Local Government Area of the state. Iwo Eleru as it is popularly called, among other tourist sites in the state is one of the most documented in the state and Nigeria as a whole.

Other sites with tourism potentials are; Ayetoro Community of Holy Apostles, Oke Maria at Oka-Akoko, Ebomi Lake at Ipesi-Akoko, the Owo Museum of Antiquities and the Palace of the Deji of Akure.

The Owo site, in particular, was first excavated in 1969–1971 by Ekpo Eyo under the auspices of the Department of  Antiquities of the Government of Nigeria. On account that Owo is centrally located between the two famous art centers of Ife and Benin, the site reflects the artistic traditions both places. Significant discoveries include terracotta sculptures dating back to the 15th century. The Owo Museum, established in the year 1968, hosts many of these rare artifacts.

Another goldmine largely neglected is the Ilaje Local Government National tourist attraction with a shoreline of about 180 km. The coastline of the Local Government, coupled with the green grass and shrubs and the Atlantic Ocean, presents it beautiful sight and weather conducive for leisure, such beautiful sight could favourably compete with what operates in the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East where tourists flock to for vacation. This can be better developed for leisure and economic purposes. Lekki Peninsula in Lagos State to Ilaje Local Government along the Atlantic Coast is about 30kilometres when the proposed coastal road from Lagos is completed.

The Governor

Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu,

Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, was on born 21 July 1956. He became president of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2008. Akeredolu is also a Managing Partner at the Law Firm of Olujinmi & Akeredolu, a Law Firm he co-founded with Chief Akin Olujinmi.

Akeredolu is the son of Reverend J. Ola  of Akeredolu family in Owo and Lady Evang. Grace B. Akeredolu of Aderoyiju family in Igbotu, Ese Odo, of Ondo State . He attended Aquinas College, Akure, Loyola College, Ibadan and Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro , for his secondary school education and Higher School Certificate, respectively. He went on to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University ) to study Law, graduating in 1977. He got called to the Nigerian Bar 1978.

Akeredolu was appointed Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997–1999. In 1998 he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He was Chairman of the Legal Aid Council (2005–2006).

In 2012, the Nigerian Bar Association named its new secretariat in Abuja after him with its president citing the reason being the need for “generational identification and recognition of those who had contributed immensely to the development of the association.

Akeredolu was candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)  for Governorship of Ondo State in the 2013 elections.  His selection pitched him in a head to head battle with the incumbent, Olusegun Mimiko and Olusola Oke.

On Saturday September 3, 2016,  Akeredolu was awarded ticket to represent the All Progressive Congress (APC) the 2016 elections for governor. On Sunday, 27 November 2016, he was declared winner after a keenly contested Ondo State gubernatorial elections.

He was inaugurated in as the governor of Ondo State on 24 February 2017 in Akure, the Ondo State Capital.
