The Vice-Chancellor of the Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State , Prof. Samuel Ibiyemi, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector .
The vice- chancellor, who made the call during the 11 th Matriculation Ceremony of the institution held recently in Owo , said that since many admission seekers were not willing to attend private universities and only a few candidates succeeded in getting admitted into public universities, many others had been unable to access tertiary education in Nigeria .
He said there was a need for government to make private universities attractive and affordable to admission seekers by awarding scholarship and loans, among other incentives , to students .
Ibiyemi also lamented that public universities had been offering admission to a small number of admission seekers in the country.
He said , “In terms of admission subscription , statistics over the past four years have consistently shown that over 98 per cent of candidates preferred to study in public universities, leaving less than two per cent to private varsities .
“That is , 98 per cent of candidates seek admission to 86 public universities compared to about two percent seeking admission as last resort to the available 74 private universities in spite of the fact that public universities can only admit less that 20 per cent of their demands .”
