The Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Health has advised the people of the state to avoid exposing their food to rodents to avoid contracting the deadly Lassa Fever.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kaseem Sulaiman gave the advice yesterday at a public sensitisation and enlightenment held with medical personnel and the general public in some local government areas in the Northern Senatorial district of the state.
Hon. Sulaiman said the enlightenment campaign was part of the committee’s oversight functions to save lives of the people of the state.
Addressing the people at the Basic Health Care Centre, Sabo Oka-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area, Dr. Sulaiman called on the health workers to take Lassa Fever evangelism to all nooks and crannies of the state to completely stamp the deadly disease out of the state.
He charged the health personnel including opinion leaders across the state to spread adequate and correct information about Lassa Fever to the grassroots to save the people from the disease.
The committee chairman also urged the general public to avoid spreading their food items, especially garri, cassava among others, on the roadside or on the floor in front of their houses to prevent getting contact with rodents, and as well keep their homes and environment clean and free from rodents.
The lawmaker listed the signs and symptoms of Lassa Fever to include fever, sore throat, difficulty to swallow, cough, headache, chest pain, abdominal pain, swelling of the face, eye, mouth, bloody diarrhea, bleeding from the eyes, nose, mouth, ears among others.
He commended the state governor for his efforts at containing the deadly disease, just as he solicited the cooperation and support of the general public to make the state Lassa fever free.
The committee took the sensitisation and enlightenment campaign to Akoko South West, Akoko North West, Akoko North East and Owo Local Government Areas of the state.
In all the Primay Health Care Centres visited in the councils, the medical officers specially appreciated the Chairman of the committee for his efforts aimed at saving lives.
They also vowed not to rest until the disease is completely kicked out of the state.
The enlightenment campaign continues with other local government areas in Ondo Central and Ondo Southern Senatorial districts of the state.
